Nik's Knots

Since winter could be here any day I decided this would be a great time to share the pattern for one of my most popular winter toques. Up here in Canada we appreciate a good, versatile, toque - which is probably why I end up making dozens of these each month. They also make great christmas gifts! I plan on stuffing one of these hats in everyone's stockings this year.

This pattern is in 9 sizes; 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years- 3-5 years, 6-12 years, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium and Adult Large. It is written in US terms. Gauge (hdc): 2 inches/5cm = 7 rows and 8 stitches.

You will need:

Worsted weight yarn
5.00mm crochet hook
Yarn needle to sew in ends
Scissors
Tape measure

0-3 months

Magic Loop or Chain 3 and work in 3rd ch from hk
Rnd 1: 8hdc. sl st to join - 8 hdc
Rnd 2: Ch 2 (does not count as st here or throughout pattern). Turn. 2hdc in each st around. sl st to join - 16 hdc
Rnd 3: Ch 2, turn. (2hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next st) 8 times. sl st to join - 24 hdc
Rnd 4: Ch 2, turn. (2hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts) 8 times. sl st to join - 32 hdc
Rnd 5: Ch 2, turn. (2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts) 8 times sl st to join - 40 hdc
Rnd 6: Ch 2, turn (2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts) 8 times sl st to join - 48 hdc
Rnd 7: Ch 2, turn (2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 11 sts) 4 times  sl st to join  - 52 hdc
Rnd 8- 16: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in each st around.  sl st to join - 52 hdc
Row 17:  Ch 2, turn. Hdc in first st and next 11 sts. - 12 sts
Row 18: Ch 2, turn. Hdc2tog, hdc in next 8 sts, hdc2tog. - 10 sts
Row 19: Ch 2, turn. Hdc2tog, hdc in next 6 sts, hdc2tog. - 8 sts
Row 20: Ch 2, turn. Hdc2tog, hdc in next 4 sts, hdc2tog. - 6 sts
Row 21: Ch 2, turn. Hdc2tog, hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog. - 4 sts
Row 22: Ch 2, turn. Hdc2tog twice. - 2 sts

Finish off by chaining 1, cutting yarn and pulling the end through. Work in loose end.
Repeat Rows 17 - 22 for second ear-flap. There should be 19 free sts across front of hat and 9 free sts across the back of hat.

Edging: Using a contrasting/accenting color, join to back of hat (around or near center is fine) sc in each st until you reach the first earflap. Work 2sc's into rows that end with ch-2's and 1sc into rows ending in hdc2tog. Keep the "2sc in first st, 1sc in next st" pattern going around ends of earflap (See chart below). Sc in each st across front of hat and repeat instructions for second earflap. Sc in remaining sts in back of hat and sl st to join. Work in all remaining ends.

Ties: Cut 12 pieces of yarn (18 for adult sizes) to about 26 -28 inches long. I started with the center-most looking stitch at the end of each earflap and then repeated for the stitches on either side. Using 2 strands of yarn (3 for adult sizes) - fold them in half and join them on using a slip knot (like you would on a latch-hook rug). You should have 3 sections on each side, containing 8 strands of yarn each. Braid the sections until you have about an inch left on the bottom. Knot the bottom and cut ends so they are even.
