Canadian Love Easy Ear-flap Toque

Since winter could be here any day I decided this would be a great time to share the pattern for one of my most popular winter toques. Up here in Canada we appreciate a good, versatile, toque - which is probably why I end up making dozens of these each month. They also make great christmas gifts! I plan on stuffing one of these hats in everyone's stockings this year.

This pattern is in 9 sizes; 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years- 3-5 years, 6-12 years, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium and Adult Large. It is written in US terms. As usual, you may sell your finished products but you may not sell, copy or otherwise steal my pattern. If you would like to share my pattern, please link it! Thanks and happy hooking!

Gauge (hdc): 2 inches/5cm = 7 rows and 8 stitches.

You will need:

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • 5.00mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle to sew in ends
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Edging: Using a contrasting/accenting color, join to back of hat (around or near center is fine) sc in each st until you reach the first earflap. Work 2sc's into rows that end with ch-2's and 1sc into rows ending in hdc2tog. Keep the "2sc in first st, 1sc in next st" pattern going around ends of earflap (See chart below). Sc in each st across front of hat and repeat instructions for second earflap. Sc in remaining sts in back of hat and sl  st to join. Work in all remaining ends.

edging shown in red.

Ties: Cut 12 pieces of yarn (18 for adult sizes) to about 26 -28 inches long. I started with the center-most looking stitch at the end of each earflap and then repeated for the stitches on either side. Using 2 strands of yarn (3 for adult sizes) - fold them in half and join them on using a slip knot (like you would on a latch-hook rug). You should have 3 sections on each side, containing 8 strands of yarn each. Braid the sections until you have about an inch left on the bottom. Knot the bottom and cut ends so they are even.

  1. I love the pattern and the fact that you include sizes from baby to adult. Thank you.

  2. Are you supposed to slip stitch on each round? I would assume so because it wouldn't connect if you didn't. I am new to reading patterns and just wanted to make sure.

    Thanks!

  3. Yes, you are supposed to slip stitch!! I can't believe I didn't write that in! I will fix it as soon as possible.

  4. FANTASTIC!!! I can make matching caps for everyone on the family!!! Thanks!!!

  5. I was wondering about the adult large pattern. It says in row 12 to do 1 hdc around and that it would equal 80 hdc, but in the row before it says you should end up with 84 hdc. which is it? can't wait to try the patterns!

    ReplyDelete
  6. It is 84 hdc, not 80, in the adult large pattern. I apologize for my typo! It has been fixed.

  7. I am new to Crocheting but would love to try out this pattern! I;m wanting to make the adult medium, Is one skein of wool going to be enough?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It should be. I use worsted weight and have a fairly tight gauge and I usually use around 250 yards for the larger hats. I would say 350-400 yards is more than enough.

      Delete
    2. I should have mentioned it depends on the size of the skein. Some pure wool yarns come in skeins of 220 yards and that might not be quite enough.

  8. What is the gauge for this pattern supposed to be? I tried out the pattern for 1-2 yrs and it fits me! I love the design of the hat, just want to make sure it's the right size, thanks!!

    1. Oh goodness! Sorry about that. The stitches on mine are quite tight (my logic is smaller holes - warmer hat, I hope anyway). I will figure out the gauge today and edit the pattern tonight. VERY sorry for the inconvenience.

  9. I used a 5 mm hook and worsted weight and followed the directions for teen/small adult and it was huge!!!!

  10. I'm having the same issue with sizing. The 1-2 year size is too big on me, and I'm 27. I think that the increase rounds are correct, but there are way too many added after the increases.

  11. Any hints on how to start the second flap?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. each size has stitch counts for where the second ear flap should be. Once you find the right place to start just pull the yarn through the stitch of the previous row (leave a couple inches of tail) and work the stitches like normal. Sometimes I hold the tail against the top of the previous row and stitch around it to secure it. Sometimes I work the first few stitches using both the tail and the working yarn together. It's really up to you. I hope that makes sense!
